What to Expect After Gel Nail Removal - Elegant Touch
At Elegant Touch, we care about the health and beauty of your nails. While gel manicures provide long-lasting color and shine, it's important to follow the proper removal process to maintain healthy nails. Here's what you can expect after your gel nails are removed:
Nail Surface
- After gel removal, your nails may appear a bit **dull** or **matte**. This is because the top layer of your natural nail has been gently buffed during the removal process.
- Your nails may feel a bit **thinner** or **softer**. This is completely normal, as gel can act as a protective layer. Don’t worry—your nails will return to their normal strength with proper care.
Possible Minor Sensitivity
- It’s common to feel **slight sensitivity** on your nails or nail beds after gel removal, especially if the gel was worn for an extended period.
- This is temporary and should subside within a day or two. If you experience prolonged discomfort, let us know, and we can recommend ways to soothe your nails.
Nail Peeling or Flaking
- Some clients may notice **peeling** or **flaking** around the edges of the nails after removal. This is due to the gel layer lifting and sometimes affecting the topmost layers of the natural nail.
- If peeling occurs, avoid picking at your nails to prevent further damage. Regular moisturizing will help to keep the skin around your nails hydrated.
Strengthening Your Nails
- After removal, it’s important to **nourish** your nails to promote healthy growth. Using cuticle oil and moisturizing creams regularly can help restore moisture and strength.
Temporary Gaps or Striations
- You may notice **gaps or horizontal striations** (lines) on your nails. These are usually harmless and will grow out over time. They are a result of the natural nail's growth pattern and pressure from the gel layer.
Regrowth Time
- It typically takes about **6 months** for your nails to fully regrow and return to their natural strength and appearance, depending on how fast your nails grow. In the meantime, continue to care for your nails to ensure they stay healthy and strong.
How to Care for Your Nails Post-Removal
- **Hydrate regularly:** Use a nourishing cuticle oil or hand cream to keep nails and cuticles moisturized.
- **Avoid harsh chemicals:** Try to avoid exposure to harsh chemicals or cleaning products that can weaken your nails.
- **Trim and file regularly:** Keep nails trimmed and shaped to reduce the risk of breaking.
- **Don’t peel off your gel nails:** Avoid peeling off your gel polish yourself, as this can cause damage to the natural nail.
- **Don’t use your nails as tools:** Be mindful of how you use your nails, and avoid using them to open packages, scrape, or perform other tasks that could cause breakage.
If you have any questions or concerns about your nails after gel removal, feel free to speak with our nail technician during your next visit. We’re here to help you keep your nails looking and feeling their best!
